Karaoke Bars

Karaoke bars probably established their roots in the early twentieth century in Japan during the Taisho rule. "Utagoe Kissa," or "coffee shop," became popular with customers who tried out their singing talents backed up by music from a live band. Soon, the trend caught up with the rest of the world, and karaoke bars are now the ideal place for fun and unwinding after a hard day's work.

Picture a typical karaoke bar today. Customers, having a few drinks, and a good time -- probably not gifted with the ability to sing, but that doesn't matter. They take the stage, and with microphone in hand try belting out a popular song- with friends razzing in the background. The lyrics are displayed on the screen, and the music is provided by the karaoke machine.

Simply put, an American karaoke bar is a restaurant or a bar having a karaoke machine that allows customers to exercise their singing abilities publicly. Though it is not uncommon to have karaoke shows every night, the schedule is generally on a weekly basis. There is the 'rotation' policy where a singer has to wait his turn to take the stage. The time between different performers is an hour or so.

Karaoke boxes (KTV) are highly popular in some places, especially in Taiwan. In a room of medium size, complete with karaoke paraphernalia, friends can get together and enjoy karaoke. Karaoke boxes are a more private means of entertainment. Around fifteen to twenty of these boxes are scattered around the room accompanying the main karaoke bar. It is commonly believed that the karaoke box concept started in South Korea where it was known as "noraebang" ("norae" and "bang" meaning song and room respectively).

Karaoke boxes became popular in North American during the 90's. However, karaoke bars are still the major source of karaoke entertainment. In China, there are "mahjong-karaoke rooms", where teenagers can enjoy karaoke and the aged indulge in mahjong, a game played by four players that originated in China.

The world of karaoke machines can be very complicated. Adding to the confusion is the fact that there are so many different types of karaoke machines. They do not all use the same type of equipment. Different machines have different features. Plus they don't even use the same type of technology on their song disks! How do you make sense of it all?

Karaoke System - The karaoke system is the karaoke player, the monitor, the speakers, and can include the library of karaoke songs played by the player.

Karaoke Machine - usually this term is used to mean the karaoke player, or the machine that plays the karaoke music. However, some karaoke systems are all-in-one units which include the player, the speakers, and the monitor all on one machine. In this case, the karaoke machine is the entire system.

Karaoke Player - the machine that physically plays the karaoke songs.

Karaoke Monitor - the screen where the lyrics to the songs show up. The all-in-one units include this screen on the machine. Other systems use your TV as the monitor and for the speakers, too.

So that also explains your 2 basic types of karaoke systems. You have the all-in-one units, and you have the karaoke machines that hook up to your TV, similar to a DVD player.

Now let's look at the different types of karaoke song disks. The mainstream, and most popular, types of disks include DVDs, CDGs, CD+Gs, MP3s, and in-built songs. Most karaoke machines are built to accept one kind or the other, instead of all the different kinds.

DVDs - These are regular DVDs which include the music sound track and then the pictures on your screen are the lyrics. Most of the time you have the lyrics against a solid background. A lot of the newer ones, though, include moving, scenic backgrounds or videos.

CDGs, CD+Gs - Both of these terms mean the same thing. Basically, it is a CD for the sound track, but the CD is also embedded with the graphics, which are the lyrics to the songs. So the "G" simply stands for graphics.

MP3s - These are usually for your computer, MP3 player, or Ipod. You can find software which will strip the vocals from your MP3s so that you can then use the sound tracks for karaoke.

In-built - Some karaoke machines come with their own libraries of karaoke songs, so they are already built into the system.

Lastly, let's look at the various features available on your karaoke machines. Karaoke machines have different features you can use to make the singer sound better and more professional. These features include being able to change the pitch of the song, the key, the tempo, the volume. Being able to add echo to your voice is pretty standard, but some machines also include different ways to adjust this feature also, such as setting different echo lengths. Some machines call the echo feature "reverb".

All karaoke machines have an input for a microphone. But what if you want to sing duets? For this reason, many of the machines now include two microphone inputs. But only some of them have the capability to adjust each microphone separately for pitch and volume.

Another feature that you might like is a scoring system. With this feature you can have karaoke contests or see how your own routine improves with practice. The few machines that have this system usually score your performance on how well you control things like your pitch, tempo, volume, and tone.

There is one other feature that only some karaoke machines include, but it could be an important feature to you. These machines have the capability to let you play the songs with the vocals included to learn the songs, and then you can turn off the vocals to sing karaoke style.

So basically, all those different models, all those different features, and all those kinds of disks, boil down to just a few key concepts. Understanding these concepts will take you a long way towards understanding pretty much any model of karaoke machine. Now that you know them all, have some fun with your karaoke machines!

Karaoke Host - You May Or May Not Qualify

For myself, a professional karaoke show is when you sing at particular establishment and the host knows exactly what they're doing and the system sounds great. Although it is sad to say, there is too large a number of karaoke hosts across the US of A that are desperately undeserving to run a show. So my question to you is this: Shouldn't there be a training center for karaoke hosting; a school that someone may take steps to train in this field to be a professional independent entrepreneur? Unfortunately there is not.

How a lot of these people across the country simply sit back and think of themselves as being successful Karaoke Hosts, is hard to believe. If all that is needed to be a professional Karaoke Host, to make other people sound great on stage, is to buy a player and some cdg's and instantly go into business without training...somebody is sadly mistaken. It only stands to reason that education is a very powerful tool that everyone should take advantage of in every field of endeavor; a strict criteria to learn a trade. Even a hamburger flipper learns the correct way on how to make a hamburger, if not, he is immediately replaced by someone who can.

Some time back, I had gone out to a well known karaoke club. The usual KJ moved out of town and was replaced by a new karaoke host. I was very disappointed to find the new Karaoke Host (his first time out in uncharted territory) wandering around the room aimlessly, not paying any attention to the sound or the singers. The music kept getting louder and louder to where it nearly drowned out the vocals of every singer completely. In addition, he didn't even bother adding any effects to the singer's voice. He had terrible feedback problems because the speakers were placed improperly and he did not even have a floor speaker monitor so you could hear yourself. This seemed to go on for several excruciating weeks without change until I couldn't take it anymore. Needless to say, I left that club to find another, vowing never to go back again.

To call yourself a Karaoke Host you must not only require the knowledge in what you are doing, but you need to learn the proper fundamentals to accomplish this goal. Most individuals are so excited; pre-occupied at getting the jobs first, they fail to realize the importance of what they need to know to be worthy. Buying the proper equipment and how they must set-up and use it with good customer service, should be mandatory. There also should be a guide to know what to charge for their services. For instance, that inexperienced KJ charged $75.00 a night to work (below the going rate) only to cut rate another, more experienced, Karaoke Host to steal the job from him. I don't know too many people that can just walk in, right off the street, and immediately start work, at a job without knowing what to do, how to do it or what to charge for it.

Now what all motivated Karaoke Hosts should really be concerned with at this point is when going into such a popular profession, go in with your eyes wide open. Prepare to take advantage of an opportunity and learn your trade. It is far better to have all that you need at your fingertips and to do it right then to simply chance it.
